Because leadership is an attitude as well as an action, it must be disguised for management. While there are certain functional similarities in bother leadership and management, leadership has distinctive characteristics. It is unfortunate that so often little attention is given to developing an organizational philosophy and training an organization’s executive personnel. Christian organizations are no exception.
What then are some of these distinctive? The comparison may be helpful at this point. Mr. Olan Hendrix has made the following distinctions (with some personal modifications):
Leadership is a quality; Management is a science and an art.
Leadership provides vision; Management supplies realistic perspectives.
Leadership deals with concepts; Management relates to functions.
Leadership exercises faith; Management has to do with fact.
Leadership seeks for effectiveness; Management strives for efficiency.
Leadership is an influence for good among potential resources; Management is the coordination of available resources organized for maximum accomplishment.
Leadership provides direction; Management is concerned about control.
Leadership thrives on finding opportunity; Management succeeds on accomplishment.
