Trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Without trust, there is nothing to build upon. In business, in marriage, and in any relationship trust is a must.
We often reassure each other by saying, “just trust me.” It’s our way of communicating that we are trustworthy, but it only holds weight if the person saying it has never broken trust with you. If someone is untrustworthy, saying “just trust me” wouldn’t go over well.
Trusting someone requires faith. You have faith that they will keep their word. you have faith that they will do what they say.
Faith is what it takes for us to trust God.
Throughout the Bible, God is reminding us to trust him. One verse about this comes to mind. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”.
I believe to trust God is quite simple as a child. It doesn’t matter that we cannot see him. As adults, however, it becomes more difficult as we experience life. We develop trust issues because we find ourselves in situations that we cannot understand. Our childlike trust in God get’s harder because we can’t see him. We have to trust and believe that He is who He says He is and He does what He says He Does.
We’re a lot like the children of Israel going in circles. They wanted to trust God, but because they couldn’t see him, they struggled. In the place of God, they built golden calves to worship because they wanted to see the God they worshipped. They wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because they could not trust a God they could not see.
We do the same. We go in circles because we don’t understand why life is the way it is. Instead of trusting God with our life, we accuse Him and we demand something better. We want:
- An answer to prayer
- A better job
- A nicer home
- A car that is dependable
- A faithful husband
- A child that is good
- A restored relationship
- A healthy body
- A nicer wardrobe
- A bigger phone
- A better grade in school
- A baby to hold
- A friend that helps in time of need
The difficulties of life put our trust in God to the test. We want answers to the problems we face and the questions we have. We want to understand the “whys” of life. And yet, God says “Trust me. I AM trustworthy. Do not lean on your own understanding.”
In my own life, God has proven trustworthy. Can I really trust God with my biggest problem? Yes, because God is all-knowing and I believe he is worth trusting.
